There are many ways to hang out in the world of Sea of Stars if you feel the need for a change of pace in your adventures.
Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and other times emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being chock-full of the unexpected twists and events you’d expect from a Sabotage production. Our custom-made render pipeline allows the creation of a breathtaking world coming to life by pushing the limits of 2D pixel-art games.ĭozens of original characters and story arcs will take you on a captivating journey.
Swim, climb, vault, jump off or hoist up ledges as you traverse seamlessly through the world with a navigation system based on platformer expertise that breaks free from the classic bound-to-the-grid tileset movement. Along with timed hits, combat features multi-character combo attacks, boosting, and a strategic "locks" system offering options to play with different damage types in order to hinder enemies while they are channeling powerful attacks or spells, all in an immersive take on the genre no random encounters, no transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding. Pressing the action button in sync with the animations increases damage output while reducing incoming damage.
The game is projected to release on PC and consoles sometime in 2022.Promising the Sabotage touch in every system, Sea of Stars aims to modernize the classic RPG in terms of turn-based combat, storytelling, exploration and interactions with the environment, while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun. On the Kickstarter page, the developers even describe they’ve included a world map to be traversed by boat, similar to Chrono Cross. If you watch the trailer for the game you can really see how ambitious this game looks. As a long time fan of SNES era JRPGs, I’m excited to see the game use a similar combat and art style as classics like Chrono Trigger. The game design displayed in its first trailer makes clear where Sea of Stars draws inspiration. Synergies between the game’s 6 playable characters will also play a large role in this game’s combat system. Additionally, players will be able to “boost” a character’s attacks for additional damage in a method potentially similar to Octopath Traveler. It seems the timing of character attacks will be important like in Mario & Lugi RPG games. While this game is retro-inspired, the Kickstarter page details a variety of upgrades to the old school RPG battle mechanics. Additionally, while the game features what appears to be a lush pixel art style it will include dynamic lighting that changes with environments and transition from day to night. The game will utilize Sabotage Studio’s strengths by allowing players to jump, swim, climb, and engage with the environment in many ways.
Sea of Stars will feature top-down environment traversal similar to many classic RPGs. The story will follow two children who utilize magic to fight against the forces of an evil alchemist. Sea of Stars is a standalone prequel to Sabotage Studio’s The Messenger.
The Kickstarter met its funding goals only hours after going live.
The developer of the critically acclaimed Ninja Gaiden throwback game The Messenger has launched a Kickstarter for a retro-inspired turn-based RPG called Sea of Stars.
